Position Overview

As a Wastewater Operator-In-Training, you will be joining a dedicated team that operates two sewer systems located in Eastsound and Orcas Village on Orcas Island. These systems are essential to the local community, providing safe and efficient wastewater treatment through advanced two-stage pumped systems.

In this role, you will receive on-the-job training, making it an excellent opportunity for individuals with no prior experience in wastewater operations. You will report directly to the General Manager and will be involved in a variety of tasks that are vital to the maintenance and operation of the District’s wastewater collection systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform maintenance, operation, troubleshooting, repairs, and replacement of equipment used in the wastewater collection system.
  • Operate the Septic Pump Truck and maintain the surrounding grounds of the treatment plants.
  • Read, interpret, apply, and explain rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Maintain records and enter data into the designated computer program.
  • Perform heavy physical labor, including lifting up to 75 pounds, working on uneven ground, climbing ladders, and digging trenches.
  • Clean and repair small engines and landscape equipment.
  • Work with toxic materials, including human waste, in a safe and controlled manner.
  • Communicate effectively with team members, customers, and the public, representing the District professionally.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • At least one year of experience working outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Willingness to acquire a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator I Certificate of Competency (training provided).
  • Ability to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with tanker endorsement.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Physical capability to perform tasks that require strength, agility, and the ability to work in confined spaces.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Annual Wage: $65,000 DOE (Overtime Eligible)
  • Bonus: $2,500 for a Class B CDL
  • Benefits: Medical, Dental, Life, and Disability Insurance; Employer/Employee Contributions to State Retirement
  • Training: Employer-paid training and certification
